What is Your Dog Eating for Dinner Tonight?
Have you ever read the back of your dog food bag? It is pretty startling once you know what everything means. Quality control in the pet food industry is not mandated, only recommended, therefore no agency oversees what is in dog food, therefore many of the leading manufacturers use inferior ingredients that have been linked to cancer and tumors.
A vast majority of dog foods use corn, wheat and soy which often contain mold. The 2005 pet food recall was due to a mold (aflatoxin) found on these grains. Many dogs are allergic to these grains as well, which leads to digestive problems and excessive chewing on their skin. Here are a few other ingredients to avoid:
By-products: these are leftover animal parts not used for human grade food, such as chicken feet, beaks, organs, etc.
Meat and bone meal, and animal digest: by-products that can include euthanized animals (not all meal is bad, just be sure and research which type of meal is in your dog food)
Animal fat: non-descript source of fats which is the leading pet food ingredient testing positive for pentobarbital (the drug used to euthanize animals)
BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin and TBHQ: chemical preservatives linked to cancer and tumors
An example of these types of ingredients can be found on the label of a popular dog food - ground corn, chicken by-product meal, corn gluten, wheat, animal fat, and rice; this is the order they are listed. For a food that advertises that it contains fruits, vegetables and protein, they sure are not very high on the list, are they?
Here at The Pooch, we see many types of food that our canine guests eat, and it ranges from popular grocery store brands to foods that come from specialty shops. We have noticed that the food can greatly affect behavior, as well as their output. Nice way to describe it, huh? Many dogs have chronic stomach issues, allergies and as a result we have recommended to many owners that they try switching to a food that does not contain the ingredients listed above. The results have often been positive, with an improvement noticed both at home and here.
We recommend that you check out a website at www.TruthAboutPetFood.com where you can research more than 40 brands of pet food. Read more |
