Springtime Health Checklist
Everyone loves springtime, with green lawns and beautiful flowers. However, the products that we use on our yards can cause severe health problems for dogs. Also, this is the time of year to begin using heartworm preventatives, and flea and tick repellents.
- Herbicides can cause vomiting, problems with the central nervous system and sudden death. Keep your pets away from treated lawns for at least 24-48 hours after an application. If your dog comes in contact with these products, wash its paws with soap and water immediately.
- Cocoa mulch is highly toxic to dogs, and attracts dogs due to its chocolate aroma and can cause the same type of health problems as herbicides.
- Spring flowers such as tulips, lilies, daffodils and hydrangea are mildly toxic and can cause vomiting and diarrhea.
- Pressure treated decks must be sealed to protect your dog from the toxic chemicals that are used to preserve the wood. Sealants should be used every 2 years.
- Heartworm preventatives should be started now that mosquito season will soon be upon us. If you have not had your dog on this medication, you will need to have him tested before starting the medication as using it can be fatal for a dog that already has this disease.
- Fleas and ticks will become active once outdoor temperatures reach 40 degrees and thrive in warm weather. Apply topical, spot-on products once a month or as recommended by the manufacturer.
